“Notwithstanding”, is a site-specific public sculpture and audio installation on Sayes Court Garden’s grounds. The project operates by superimposing multiple temporalities; visions from what once was John Evelyn’s Elysium overlaid onto the current temperament of the area, marked by public dispute. Rather than creating a memorial for the lamentation of a long-lost past, the project puts emphasis on the liminal space the garden presently occupies, and addresses its potential for galvanising dialogue in its area of influence.
We want to thank Dr. Karen Liljenberg for her insightful research into Sayes Court’s history in Deptford and for giving us permission to use parts of her blog entries in “Sayes Court- London’s Lost Garden” for the audio narrative.
