Parade Call Out

Join Jelili Atiku’s processional performance ‘The Earth is a Beehive’ on the final day of Deptford X Festival 2022!

On the final day of Deptford X Festival 2022, Nigerian performance artist, Jelili Atiku will lead a parade of young people from Lewisham Borough through Deptford. Through a series of workshops held throughout the borough, young people have been making costumes for the parade and learning about the themes of Atiku’s work.

For the final staging of the work, Atiku is now seeking artists who would like to make a costume and perform in the parade, heading up the procession with him and completing the aesthetic impact of the work. Atiku has staged these processional performances at Manifesta in Palermo, Venice Biennale, and now Deptford X festival. This is an incredible opportunity to be part of an ambitious, participatory art work that is rooted and resonates in the geography and history of Deptford.

You are invited to make a costume for the parade in the shape of a fish head to be worn as a headdress. This is open to interpretation by participating artists. You will also be required to paint yourself at the start of the parade in washable, non-toxic gouache. The artist will determine the colour and the paint will be supplied. You will need to wear light coloured clothes that you do not mind getting dirty.

Deptford X are producing an exhibition of the project to take place in Lewisham at the end of the year. Costumes, as well as a film of the event, will be displayed.
