Be a Fringe artist

We’re excited to invite you to apply for the 2022 Deptford X Fringe!

The Fringe is the seed of the Deptford X Festival. It’s a celebration of the area’s art scene, bringing together artists, community groups, students, and people new to making artwork. Over the course of the festival, the Fringe will take over Deptford, placing art in unexpected locations, rooted into the fabric of everyday lives. All sorts of artworks will be exhibited such as installations in public spaces, shopfronts, cafes, market stalls, and even in people’s homes.

This year, we’re encouraging Fringe artists to congregate their projects as close as possible to Deptford High Street, creating a hub for a vibrant range of activities for the much-anticipated return of the festival. It will extend across indoor and outdoor spaces motivated by the statement ‘Here for Art’. We are also interested in Fringe projects related to gardening practices seeking to work with a community space.

Deptford X is a festival for all and we particularly welcome participation by artists from black and minority ethnic backgrounds, and by artists with disabilities. For support on your application, come along to one of our Fringe Meet-Ups which will be happening across Deptford and online each fortnight until the Fringe deadline. You can find out more below and on the Deptford X Instagram.

Please fill in the google form below to make your submission. The deadline for Fringe submissions is Monday 18th July at 5pm

Fringe FAQs

Who can apply to the Fringe?
The Fringe is primarily aimed at artists and community groups who are active in our local borough of Lewisham. We welcome contributions from visual artists of any and every kind: amateurs or professionals, trained or untrained, emerging or established. We particularly welcome participation by artists from black and minority ethnic backgrounds, and by artists with disabilities.

Deptford X is free to apply to.

How do I apply to the Fringe if I’m not an artist?
Unlike last year, the application process is the same for artists and community groups. Simply fill in the application google form.

What questions does the Fringe application form ask?
The application form asks about:

  • You and your proposed work, including a short description, long description and images of your proposed work
  • Your venue
  • Your open and close times
  • Monitoring information

Where can I stage my Fringe project?
All Fringe projects should be at a venue within 750m of Deptford train station, with a particular emphasis on Deptford High Street. It is up to Fringe artists to find a venue themselves, though we can offer support at Fringe Meet-Ups.

In the past, artists have exhibited work in shop windows, libraries, roundabouts, public walls and squares, railway arches, pubs, cafes, churches, community centres, railway stations, rooftops, bin lorries, billboards, restaurants, cinemas, cellars… the list is almost endless.

Are there any criteria my Fringe project must meet?
Yes. By being part of the Fringe, you’re committing to:

  • Staging your project within 750m of Deptford train station.
  • Proposing a project that’s rooted in the fabric of Deptford that pays attention to the people who live and work here.
  • Complete a risk assessment which you will submit to us before the festival.
  • Provide feedback, visitor numbers, and, where possible, audience feedback.

We reserve the right to decline any project that we deem discriminatory, offensive or contrary to our values of learning, care, respect, openness and equality.

If you have any further questions, please send an email to jessica@deptfordx.org.
