Kwong Lee announced as the new Director of Deptford X


Deptford X are delighted to announce the appointment of Kwong Lee as the new director, who will be joining the organisation in July.

“I am really pleased to be joining Deptford X as its new Director to continue and develop its incredible work by past staff, trustees, volunteers and, of course, the artists who have contributed so much to the successes of the past 25 years. I have long admired its dedication to artist-led and local communities and am looking forward to working together with commitment and care; as highlighted by the current director, Nathalie Boobis.”

Kwong Lee is an arts professional, most recently working as a producer for Factory International/Manchester International Festival, where he worked on new commissions by artists such as Keith Khan, Yayoi Kusama, Marta Minujín, Lubaina Himid and Ibrahim Mahama, as well as artist’s R&D projects. From 2005 to 2016, he was the Director of Castlefield Gallery (CG) in Manchester, an artist-initiated visual arts venue and artist development agency championing artists and engaging audiences with emerging contemporary art practices.His freelance work has been with universities, Arts Council England, artist groups and individual artists.

Between 2013 and 2016, Lee co-chaired Contemporary Visual Arts Manchester (CVAM), part of the national CVAN. Lee was also part of Culture Forum North, an initiative for strategic partnerships between universities and cultural organisations. He has served as a board member for Art Gene, Barrow in Furness and the former Centre for Chinese Contemporary Art, Manchester. He is on the advisory board of artist-led Paradise Works in Salford.

Lee has lectured at various universities including Dartington College of Art, University of Leeds, Sheffield Hallam University and Wimbledon School of Art. At CG, he was the industry-based supervisor for a joint PhD with Manchester Metropolitan University, exploring artist development. He has presented at conferences, seminars and symposia. As an artist, he has exhibited in the UK (e.g. at the Whitworth, Manchester), and in Hong Kong and Japan.

His leadership will ensure that Deptford X continues to uplift artistic practice and that Deptford benefits from amazing art experiences.

The Board would like to extend their deepest gratitude to their outgoing Director, Nathalie Boobis, for her dedication, curation and remarkable commitment to ensuring a diverse range of artists and residents were involved in festival activities during her tenure.”
